Has your home siding reached its breaking point? Is it aesthetically worn down? If so, you should probably think about making a change.
There are all types of terrific siding materials on the market today, each of which offers something a little different in the ways of durability, aesthetics, and overall performance. Three of the most popular of these materials include fiber cement siding, wood siding, and vinyl siding.
Interested in installing one of these siding materials on your Fox Point property? Need help choosing the right one? Then read on! This article is going to help you make your decision.
Durability
When it comes to durability, fiber cement is the top choice. Whereas wood siding will last for between 20 and 30 years, and vinyl siding will last for between 30 and 40 years, fiber cement will last for well over 50 years.
Maintenance
There is a world of difference when it comes to the maintenance needed for each material.
Wood siding is, by far, the most maintenance-intensive siding material there is. Not only does it need to be cleaned on a regular basis, but sanded, stained, painted, and sealed as well. The maintenance of wood siding is not only time-consuming, but costly as well.
Vinyl and fiber cement, on the other hand, require almost no maintenance whatsoever. Because they’re waterproof and sunproof, they don’t warp or become misshapen. Generally, all these siding materials will need is a cleaning from time to time.
Aesthetics
Aesthetically speaking, all three of these materials have something to offer. However, it is generally agreed upon that vinyl is at the bottom of the aesthetic totem pole.
While vinyl is not bad looking, it’s not particularly great looking either. That being said, it’s available in a variety of different colors and, at the very least, provides an aesthetic that is popular (vinyl siding is the most commonly used siding in the United States).
Both fiber cement and wood are exceedingly attractive materials, capable of bringing an elegance to any home where they are installed. Because they’re capable of being painted, they’re open to essentially endless color options.
Insulation
As far as insulation goes, all three types of siding vary. The quality and construction of the material you choose will have a larger impact on its insulation than the material itself.
For instance, plain vinyl siding possesses poor insulative qualities. However, vinyl siding with foam inlays is highly insulative, working to make homes extremely energy efficient.
Fiber cement siding is in the same category as vinyl. When it’s in its basic form, it lacks insulation. However, when it’s equipped with foam inlays, it’s exceedingly energy efficient.
Wood is a little different from vinyl and fiber cement, as it’s highly insulative regardless of whether or not it’s equipped with inlays.
Cost
Cost-wise, vinyl is the best deal available. Most vinyl siding falls between $2 and $7 per square foot, making it the cheapest siding material available.
Next up is wood, which typically costs between $5 and $8 per square foot. If you opt for wood shingles as opposed to wood panels, you’ll probably have to spend between $6 and $9 instead.
The most expensive of the three is fiber cement. This material costs between $5 and $9 per square foot.
