Kitchen Remodeling Contractor in Milwaukee: Choosing a Cabinet Material
Is the look of your kitchen bringing you down? Does it seem to be falling apart at the seams? If so, it might be time for you to make some changes.
While there are all types of changes you could make to your Milwaukee kitchen, one of the most impactful changes would be to replace the cabinets. After all, the cabinets make up a large portion of a kitchen’s overall aesthetic. Swapping them out can produce an entirely different look.
Are you interested in installing new cabinets in your Milwaukee kitchen? Wondering what types of materials are available to you? Then read on! We’re going to review the most popular cabinet materials below.
Wood

There are all types of wood materials for your to choose from; some of which are hardwoods, and some of which are softwoods. We’ll review the options below.
Hardwoods
Sturdy, heavy, and durable, hardwoods can withstand years of wear and tear. Ranging from cost-effective to expensive, they come in a wide variety of styles. Some of the most popular hardwoods for cabinets include red oak, white oak, hickory, and hard maple.
Softwoods
When it comes to cabinets, softwoods are much less common than hardwoods. This is due largely to their lack of durability. Because they’re soft, they tend to dent more easily.
That being said, they’re uniquely attractive, capable of bringing a fresh aesthetic to any kitchen. This, combined with their affordability, makes them a suitable choice. The softwood that’s most commonly used for kitchen cabinets is pine. However, others can be used as well.
Plywood
Another option is plywood, which consists of thin, laminated wood strips. Highly durable and very affordable, plywood is one of the most popular cabinet materials out there.
The downside to plywood? It lacks the high-end aesthetic of natural wood. Now, this isn’t to say that it’s ugly. It’s actually quite appealing. It’s just not the type of material that you might find in a luxury home.
Particleboard
Particleboard is similar to plywood. Like plywood, it consists of various wood particles, pressed together and then sealed with laminate. Unlike plywood, it lacks durability.
Because of the way it’s manufactured, it’s limited in terms of structural integrity. As such, the weight of the items stored within it can cause it a great deal of strain. Over time, this weight can cause it to sag. Not to mention, it’s highly vulnerable to moisture. Steam, humidity, and direct water exposure can cause it to deteriorate before its time.
That said, if you’re looking for the most affordable material available, particleboard will accommodate you. The only problem is that it might not give you as much bang for your buck.
Aluminum
Looking to give your kitchen a sleek and professional look? If so, you should consider installing aluminum cabinets. Durable, attractive, and low maintenance, they will provide your kitchen with a whole new identity.
There are some potential drawbacks with aluminum cabinets, however. First of all, they’re expensive. Second of all, they’re prone to denting. Last but not least, they are generally pretty noisy.
All of that said, aluminum is a terrific material. Resistant to water exposure, it’s treated so that it’s won’t rust. If you’re looking for a high-end, professional look, aluminum cabinets are the way to go.
