Are you preparing for a kitchen remodeling in Fox Point, Wisconsin? Ready for an entirely new look? If so, there are a number of components that you should take into consideration. Perhaps one of the most important of these components is the cabinetry.
Cabinets come in a variety of different materials, from aluminum, to vinyl, and much more. However, maybe you’ve decided specifically on wood cabinets? If so, you have a variety of woods from which to choose.
To help you decide on which wood is right for your cabinets, we will discuss some characteristics of the different types of wood below.
Strong and durable, white oak can withstand quite a bit of abuse. You can typically expect to get decades of heavy use out of white oak cabinets.
Naturally possessing a moderate brown color, it blends well with just about any other color you could imagine. Sporting a fine grain, it’s not flashy, but provides an air of luxury to any room in which it is placed.
You may think red oak to be similar to white oak, and, in some ways, it is. But the fact of the matter is that the two oaks actually have quite a few differences. Aesthetically, red oak has a much lighter color than white oak; almost a tan color, in fact. In addition, it has a much bolder grain pattern than does white oak.
Functionally, the woods are similar, yet slightly different. Whereas both woods are strong and durable, red oak doesn’t quite possess the strength of white oak. It’s much quicker to damage.
If you want your cabinets to have an especially rustic look, you might consider using hickory. Hickory wood has a subdued grain pattern to go with a light brown, almost-yellow, appearance.
This wood possesses above-average strength and durability, capable of thriving through decades and decades of consistent use.
If you’re hoping to give your kitchen a unique look, maple cabinets might be just what you seek. As a light-colored material, it sports a very fine grain pattern that is almost unnoticeable from across the room.
Strong, durable, and lightweight, it excels in all facets. The only problem with maple wood is that it tends to be a bit more expensive than other materials.
Inexpensive, yet possessing a unique aesthetic, birch wood is a terrific choice for those remodeling on a budget. Possessing a subdued grain pattern, it has a fairly light tone compared to other woods. It should be noted, however, that its coloring is often inconsistent; It’s an amalgam of dark and light shades.
Strong, light, and durable, birch can withstand a great deal of abuse.
If you’re looking for cabinetry that truly stands out, you might want to consider using pine wood. Though not nearly as strong or as durable as the other woods used for cabinetry, pine wood is aesthetically unique.
Possessing a light color with randomly-placed wood knots, there is no other wood on the market that matches its appearance. It is as rustic as they come.
