Since the bathtub was first invented, it has evolved substantially. What were once just large containers to pour water into have turned into technologically-advanced entities which provide various levels of functionality.
There are bathtubs of all types available these days with each and every type providing something a little different in the ways of style and performance.
Perhaps you’re thinking about installing a new bathtub, but are wondering which type would suit you best? If so, you’ve come to the right place. These are the different types of bathtubs on the market today.
Different Types of Bathtubs
Standard Tub
The most common type of bathtub doesn’t technically have a name, so we’ll just refer to it as a standard tub.
Standard tubs are the tubs that you see in the majority of homes across the country. These tubs are not only designed for bathing, but for showering as well.
Compared to more sophisticated tubs, standard tubs lack depth. However, they are still generally deep enough for you to submerge your entire body in.
In most cases, these types of tubs are installed in the corner of your bathroom, using your bathroom wall as a backsplash to prevent shower water from landing on your floor. They’re ideal for those who can’t fit a separate shower and tub. Instead they combine everything into one single entity.
Soaking Tub
If you enjoy soaking yourself in the tub as a means to relax, you might be interested in installing a soaking tub.
Soaking tubs generally don’t allow for showering, but are terrific for those who treasure a relaxing bath. Compared to standard bathtubs, soaking tubs are much deeper. Because of this, they allow you to easily submerge your entire body in water.
Generally, soaking tubs are free-standing, not sitting up against any walls. While they can provide quite a sophisticated aesthetic, they can also take up quite a bit of room. For this reason, they’re not well-suited for small bathrooms. Plus, if you need to shower, you’ll have to buy a separate tub for showering as well.
In essence, while they’re very relaxing, soaking tubs are only realistic options for those who have a decent amount of bathroom space to spare.
Walk-in Tub
If you or someone in your household has trouble moving and maneuvering about, a walk-in tub might be a good option for you.
Walk-in tubs are designed with doors which can be opened and closed so that users don’t have to step over the edge of the tub in order to get in. You simply open the door, sit down in the tub, close the door, and fill the tub with water.
The only legitimate problem with these tubs is that you’ll have to spend a long time sitting in them waiting for water to pour and drain. They can be time-consuming.
But if you’ve got serious health problems which limit your maneuverability, they are the safest and most convenient option.
Whirlpool
You’re likely well aware of what a whirlpool is, but we’d might as well discuss its advantages and disadvantages.
Whirlpools are tubs which make use of jet streams as a means of providing relaxation and massage capabilities. Hooked up to a series of pipes, they’re a great deal more complex than other types of tubs.
While they can be very relaxing, they also take up a lot of space. Not to mention, they’re typically not equipped to handle showering. If you wish to shower, you’ll likely need to buy an entirely separate tub in addition to a whirlpool.
These types of tubs are generally seen as luxury tubs. But if you’ve got the money and the space, there’s no reason not to make a purchase.
