If you’re building a new home or making exterior renovations to your existing home, there are a variety of different aspects to consider. One of the most important of these is roofing. Roofing in Bay View, Wisconsin is important not only for aesthetic purposes, but for functional purposes as well.
There are a number of common roofing materials out there, all of which offer their very own pluses and minuses. Three of the most popular materials include asphalt shingles, wood shingles, and metal panels.
Interested in utilizing one of these roofing materials? Trying to decide which is best for you? Read below!
Durability
When it comes to durability, metal roofing outperforms both wood and asphalt. In most cases, you can expect to get at least 40 years out of metal roofing. On some occasions, metal roofing will last for up to 80 years.
Wood and asphalt shingles, on the other hand, will generally offer around 20 years of solid functionality. In most cases, you can expect at least 15 years.
It should be noted, however, that maintenance is needed with all three of these materials. Failure to maintain your roof regularly will result in a shortened lifespan.
Maintenance
When it comes to maintenance, wood shingles are the most labor-intensive. Because wood can become saturated in water, and because bacteria is attracted to water, wood shingles are prone to taking on moss and other mildew. However, a number of measures can be taken to reduce the amount of mildew which builds up on your wood shingles.
Metal and asphalt roofing, in contrast, are fairly simple to maintain. Just be mindful to keep your metal or asphalt roof cleared of random debris (ie. tree branches, moss, etc.).
Cost
Asphalt shingles are easily the cheapest of the three options. For this reason, asphalt is the most commonly used roofing material in the world.
Whereas asphalt shingles cost around $90 per 100 square feet, wood shingles cost around $400 per 100 square feet, and metal roofing costs anywhere from $400 to $800 per 100 square feet.
Insulation
When it comes to insulation, wood and metal roofing materials tend to reign supreme. Wood is a natural insulator — the thicker it is, the less heat and cold it will allow through.
Metal, in and of itself, is not a great insulator. However, metal roofing is typically equipped with insulation, providing terrific insulative qualities all throughout the year.
Asphalt shingles do not perform as well in this regard. While they should provide enough insulation to regulate the temperature of your home, they won’t do too much to keep down the costs of energy bills.
Aesthetics
Aesthetically-speaking, wood shingles tend to stand out compared asphalt and metal roofing. You’ll often see wood shingles used on the most luxurious of houses, aiding in their atmosphere of prestige.
Metal roofing can certainly look good on a home. However, it depends on the type of metal roofing that you choose.
Asphalt shingles are fairly standard. They generally aren’t going to do a lot to make your home stand out, but they aren’t going to do a lot to bring down the aesthetic of your home either.
