Your roof saves you from the elements but did you know that it can be used to reduce your energy bill as well? Of course, that depends which roofing option you go for. Metal roofing and asphalt shingles are popular options these days but the one you choose should meet your energy demands.
Asphalt shingles vs. Metal Roofing
- Asphalt shingles are cheaper in comparison but their maintenance can be a bit costly. They will need to be repaired or replaced if they curl in on themselves or break off. However, the materials are not costly as much and neither is the labor required. A metal roof has a high upfront cost but its maintenance costs are low in comparison. It is also a great energy saver.
- Shingles are durable but the asphalt variety is stronger than those that are made from organic asphalt. These can last you anywhere from 15 to 30 years if they are maintained well and expected on a regular basis. Metal roofing options are more durable in comparison and if maintained, can last you for 50 years or more.
- Shingles made from asphalt are good at retaining hear during the winter season but this capability backfires during the summer season. Metal roofing in comparison is considered to be the best option to keep homes cool in summer and warm in winter.
- Shingles that are made from asphalt are fire proof but not the organic variety. Some metallic roofs are more so than others though. For example, aluminum can catch fire easily while copper cannot.
